Driven: Mitsubishi Outlander

On paper, the all-new third generation Mitsubishi Outlander would appear to be an astonishing beast. It’s 100kg lighter than the outgoing model, so it now tips the scales at 1,555kg. In context, that’s less than a BMW 1-Series and half the weight of an Audi Q7. It’s also seven per cent more aerodynamic and now has the same drag co-efficient as a Nissan Micra. But this is no flimsy thing. In securing a five-star Euro NCAP rating, it got better marks than the XC60 from Volvo, a company renowned for its safety reputation. On the road it’s fine but the dynamics in no way challenge the best performers. Yet with emissions as low as 138g/km and combined fuel economy as high as 53.3mpg, it’s the most efficient of any seven-seat 4x4 segment. I hope it does well – effort has clearly gone into its development and that should be applauded.
